Understanding the Creative Process

Creating a video can often seem like a straightforward task, yet it can also become an intricate dance with resistance. In my recent attempt to produce a short video, I dedicated hours of effort, facing moments of doubt and frustration along the way. This creative journey served as an important lesson on the nature of resistance and how it can often adversely affect the creative process.

Identifying Resistance in the Creative Process

I had to think about what happened:

  • AI tools weren't cooperating.

  • Videos weren't rendering correctly.

  • Aspect ratios were wrong.

  • Thumbnails weren't behaving.

  • Time disappeared.

  • Frustration mounted.

  • I was tempted to quit.

At first I thought well there has to be glitches in one of the programs I was using, but most everything I tried was not working correctly! Then I begin to think...wait! This is not my usual struggle to get through posting a video short. In fact I had this project clear in my mind on what steps I needed to do get this project done. Then I started thinking that possibly I was being attacked by resistance...hmm. And indeed the resistance overwhelming! Then I remembered that the enemy doesn't attack non threats. So I rebuked him out of my office and away from me in the name of Jesus. After hours of being literally stuck, I finally moved on with great progress!

Then the next day I saw the positive results:

The Short got finished.

  • The song was published.

  • Hundreds of people saw it.

  • People liked it.

  • People subscribed.

  • Someone was encouraged in their faith.

This is a lesson many Christians can relate to. Often when we're trying to do something God has put on our hearts, we expect the path to be smooth. Instead, we hit obstacles and start wondering if we're supposed to stop. The Bible certainly speaks about spiritual opposition and the reality of spiritual warfare.

Ephesians 6:12 – “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Galations 6:9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

Every creator hits days where they wonder, "Why is this one thing taking so long?" Then a day later they're celebrating because the work is finally out in the world to help others become closer to the Lord! Even if some days are not easy, I have the Holy Spirit's strength to keep on working for God's kingdom!
